SuperFly Bonsai's Professional All Purpose Bonsai Soil Mix - Premium Blend

This mix is the most commonly used and accepted mix by bonsai professionals around the world. In the Northeast United States, this is sometimes known as "Boon Mix" or "Franks Mix".

Is It Dirt?
No. Bonsai trees do not like "dirt" and will in most cases die if left in dirt over long periods of time. This is substrate.

What Is In It?
The primary components are Akadama, Pumice and Black Lava. We also added a bit of Horticultural Charcoal. These components have been found over time to provide the best drainage, water retention, nutrient retention and air circulation possible to promote healthy bonsai.
• 1/3 Japanese Hard Akadama - clay like component that has excellent binding nutrients, it holds water and it breaks down over time allowing roots to grown in its place.
• 1/3 Japanese Hyuga Pumice - volcanic byproduct that is excellent at retaining water.
• 1/3 USA Black Lava Rock - volcanic byproduct that is excellent at promoting air to the root area. Black lava also adds structure to the soil.
• Horticultural Charcoal - added to harbor beneficial bacteria and add humic acid in the soil.

Particle Size
This is very important in a soil mix.  This blend is sized from 1/16" to about 1/4" in size.  This allows air to the roots while maintaining moisture needed by deciduous trees.

How Do I Use It?
This is "real" bonsai soil. Be sure your bonsai pot has holes in the bottom covered by bonsai mesh.  Each micro climate may require different amounts of water. On very hot/dry days you may need to water two/three times while around freezing you may need to water every week or two. Push your finger 1" into the soil and feel for moisture. If it is dry, it is time to water.  Paying attention to your bonsai's moisture level is very important.  When potting into a new mix, the tree will use water at a different rate and the soil will dry at a different rate. Pay Attention!  Also, be sure to repot at the proper time of year for your climate and type of tree.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Ask a Question
  • When do i replant my bonsai? They are only 2-3 inches tall. Is it ok to your soil mix when they are this small or should i wait longer?

There are too many variables when repotting trees for me to provide valid information.  Your climate, the type of tree, the time of year, the tree's health and several other factors come into play to safely repot a bonsai.  I suggest google searching for when to repot your specific type of tree.

If you are dealing with seedlings, they should not be potted into this soil until the pots size is being reduced and the trunk thickness desired has been obtained.  If they are 2-3" in size, a standard good draining potting mix would likely be ideal for 2-3 years at least depending on the type of tree you are working with and the look of the bonsai you desire.

  • Would this work for a red oak bonsai? If not what would you suggest would work.

This would work, but I would use our Deciduous Mix as it is specifically mixed for deciduous trees.

  • Have a dwarf jade bonsai that desperately needs new medium & pruning. I lived in Fl & it was outside for last 15 years, my girlfriend gave it to me 10 years ago, she never pruned it so it's weeping. I repotted into slightly larger bonsai pot about 8 years ago using wrong medium (probably soil/cactus mix; I knew nothing about bonsai). It's been doing well. Moved to WA state two months ago, had it carefully shipped, did wonderful with shipping but is now an inside plant with a lot of bright light but in a much drier environment. I will put it where it gets great sun as soon as I repot it. Its doing well but has no medium left just roots. Thinking of bigger pot, using your bonsai mix & pruning. Been researching & watching tons of videos, dont know if this is the right season to do this for this type of bonsai (portucalaria afra I believe is the name of the bonsai I have) HELP!!!

Yes, now is the time.  Don't wait any longer.  Tropicals are best done in the heat of summer.  Pruning and repotting.
