Red Lava is commonly used in bonsai as an additive to soils. While lava would be a pretty good medium to promote tree growth by itself as it drains very well, it is best to use it in a mix. Lava will also help prevent soil compaction in your mix and give it structure.
Is It Dirt?
No. Bonsai trees do not like "dirt" and will in most cases die if left in dirt over long periods of time. This is substrate.
What Is In It?
USA Red Lava is a solidified molten rock that was formed after molten lave cooled from a volcano. The color of the lava was decided by the temperature of the flow and by the chemical composition which includes any impurities that may have found it's way into the flow.
How Do I Use It?
Repot your bonsai tree in this mixed with other bonsai soil amendments (most common are akadama and pumice) to promote great moisture retention and drainage. Be sure your bonsai pot has holes in the bottom covered by bonsai mesh.
Each micro climate may require different amounts of water. On very hot/dry days you may need to water two/three times while around freezing you may need to water just once per month. Push your finger 1" into the soil and feel for moisture. If it is dry, it is time to water.

Washed vs Unwashed
We offer both washed and unwashed lava. We only offer unwashed in the red lava. Black lava has both washed and unwashed.
The washed lava is a premium product that has been sieved twice and washed. This lava is very clean, dark uniform black and has virtually no dust. We use the washed lava in all of our premium soil mixes. The washed lava is more because it is perfect and 100% ready to go.
We also have black lava!
The unwashed lava has been sieved once and dust will be in the bag, the majority of the product will be the size listed. I highly suggest sieving the lava inside a tub of water. This will clean the remaining dust and will cause minimal dust to enter the air.
Please Note: Do not breath the dust from lava as it is very abrasive and not good to get in your lungs or eyes. We sifted the majority of the dust out of the lava prior to bagging, however more will be created in the shipping process. It is recommended to utilize a dust mask whenever dealing with lava dust. If you purchased unwashed lava, I suggest sieving it in a tub of water or just water your tree in well and most of the dust will just fall out of the drain holes.

I've only recently started adding lava to my soil mixes. so I was making my first substantial (for me) purchase. I'm quite used to finding lots of size variability in large bags of soil components and I was expecting more of the same. Was I ever surprised! Other than minor dust, I don't think there were any undersized particles in my purchase and the sizes were remarkably consistent. I have several large juniper bonsai to repot, so I expect to burn through my two large bags quickly and look forward to placing my next order.
Lava is a good size. Of course it needs to be rinsed, but is doing it’s job

How do I Check the Status of my Order?

Show Pickup & The Superfly Express
We attend 7-10 shows a year (if not cancelled), mostly on the east coast. Please check our calendar to see if we may be attending a show close to your location, and we can arrange to bring your order for pickup at the show. No minimum.
We started the Superfly Express shortly after the Covid-19 pandemic started. We did this as a way to get products to wholesale customers with no shipping fee. We basically will deliver your order on one of our trips to your area for free if the order is over $1000 and you are close to our route. We will also deliver retail customers orders over $1000 if they don't want to utilizer our free shipping for whatever reason. We currently only travel east of the Mississippi river and have 4 routes.
