BonsaiMax™ Slow Release Bonsai Fertilizer Granules

BonsaiMax fertilizer will give your bonsai an immediate boost and then continue feeding over the course of 1-2 months (depending on temperature and the amount the tree is watered).

BonsaiMax fertilizers are designed to "melt away" a little each time you water the tree.  This is a super easy and reliable way to steadily fertilize bonsai.  No dangerous chemicals to worry about or mix and no little plastic balls left behind in your soil, just organics.
Natural ingredients from the sea formulate the perfect fertilizer for different stages in bonsai development.  You also don't need to worrry about damaging the environment with BonsaiMax like you do with chemical fertilizers.

BonsaiMax Formulas:
Push - 12-4-5  For Pre-Bonsai and to push overall plant growth.
Maintain - 5-7-4  For developing ramification and maintaining developed bonsai

 BonsaiMax Forms:
Pellets For Substrate based soil (Boon Mix, Aoki, Pumice, Lava, etc.)
Granular For organic type soil that contain high organic content

The use of  natural based fertilizer allows your soil to maintain beneficial microorganisms such as beneficial bacteria, actinomycetes, fungi, protozoa and nematodes that help plants thrive.  Because BonsaiMax ingredients are organic based, they do not interfere with the soil environment and allow it to flourish.  Chemical fertilizers kill off most if not all microorganisms and do not promote a natural environment within the soil.

Natural based fertilizers may grow some mold in the week after application.  This is normal and it will subside in a few days.  Mold also may be a sign of overwatering, lack of proper air flow and/or highly organic soil that is not normally ideal for most bonsai species.

Use during the growing season for the type of tree you are growing.  For example, in the Central-Northeast you would likely use this once per month from about April through August.  For tropicals, you would likely fertilizer every month throughout the year.  Place fertilizer under moss to minimize moss burn caused by pretty much all fertilizers.

Ideal when used with BonaiMax Enhance kelp based liquid spray/water/drench.

    Ask a Question
    • Will granules work in Superfly bonsai soil.

Yes, our fertilizer granules can be used in any of our soil mixes.

    • Is this fertilizer good for succulents as well? I am currently in the mist of transplanting a couple of snake plants from their nursery pots to ceramic pots but just want to make sure I am fully equipped for the process (First timer). I am also purchasing your bonsai and succulent "soil".

Yes this will work great for succulents.  Please keep in mind that you will want to use much less than directed on the package.  Succulents do not like excessive fertilizer.  Start with less than you would think mixed in the soil then after a 45-60 days start light applications on top, replacing every 30-45 days.

    • How do you apply fertilizer on substrate? Is fertilizer even necessary when using substrate?

When you use substrate as soil, use the pellets and not the granular.  The pellets stay on the surface and don't fall down through the pot like the granular will.  Follow the directions on the bag.

You certainly do need fertilizer for substrated based soil as it normally has very little available nutrients.

    • I received my fertilizer today, and I note two different methods of application, one for inorganic and one for organic soil. Please explain the need for different application methods.

When you have organic soil there is no purpose to make piles.  Organic soil holds fertilizer, inorganic holds very little.  When using inorganic fertilizer, the fertilizer quickly is pulled through the soil with the water and is not retained.  A larger amount of fertilizer in one area helps assure the roots below that area receive adequate fertilizer.  This is also why the fertilizer piles are rotated around the pot to help cover the most roots possible.

Subscribe to and watch his fertilizer videos for a more in depth explination of why this is done.

    • When you measure the fertilizer with the scoop, is that a level scoopful or a heaping scoopful?

A level scoop would be the proper measurement.  Sorry for the lack of clarity.

    • Do you have a prepare (low nitrogen) formula coming out soon?

We are trying to get this out.  It is very difficult to make a natural based fertilizer with no or very low nitrogen.  It seems every component you add has nitrogen that accumulates.  We will keep working on it and get it out ASAP, but I do not have a timeline.
