Kanuma - Japanese Bonsai Soil - Azaleas
Imported Japanese Kanuma
Japanese Kanuma is the perfect soil for Azaleas. Kanuma is a very light volcanic rock that can be a pain when watering as it tends to float a little. While watering may be tough with Kanuma, your trees will be much happier.
2.5mm (1mm - 3mm) - Shohin (small) Bonsai - 1/16" - 1/8"
5mm (3mm - 6mm) - Standard Bonsai Use 1/8" - 1/4" - The Most Common Size
7mm (7mm - 12mm) - Between 1/4" and 1/2" - Many Use It For Larger Trees or a drainage layer.
Is It Dirt?
No. Bonsai trees do not like "dirt" and will in most cases die if left in dirt over long periods of time. This is substrate.
What Is In It?
Kanuma is the soil from the Kanuma region of Japan. Kanuma is mined from the ground then baked and sifted to size. Kanuma is excellent at retaining moisture and also promotes great drainage. Kanuma also allows roots to grow through it which helps create a fibrous root ball. While many think Kanuma is for acidic loving plants, it actually is not super acidic at all and ranges from about 6-8 depending on location, Our kanuma usually has a ph of 6.5 - 7.5. Roots seem to love Kanuma and it works well with trees that grow fast and need repotted often. Kanuma does break in the environment similar to Akadama. Using kanuma as a component in any soil mix would not be a problem and likely more beneficial.
How Do I Use It?
Repot your bonsai tree in this or a mix of this and other bonsai soil amendments. Be sure your bonsai pot has holes in the bottom covered by bonsai mesh.
Each micro climate may require different amounts of water. On very hot/dry days you may need to water two/three times while around freezing you may need to water just once per month. Push your finger 1" into the soil and feel for moisture. If it is dry, it is time to water.
Kanuma - Japanese Bonsai Soil - Azaleas
My kanuma soil was delivered on time and as described. I hope to update this review about the product after I see the results.
Great product great company! Fast shipping
It is the best quality Japanese Kanuma I can buy。
I order one bag and try it, worked well, and order an other two bag, would recommend it. When doing bonsai I offer the best soil mix available at the time, cost is a secondary consideration.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERSAsk a Question
Can I use kanuma for cactus and succulents?
I never tried it, but there is no reason it would not work. It may be a pain however. There are two things about kanuma. 1. Kanuma breaks down quickly, don't use it on things that don't need repotted every 1-2 years. 2. Kanuma floats, this can be a pain when watering.
I suggest pumice, our Hyuga pumice is almost the same color as kanuma and will work much better.
