SAkadama Bonsai Growing Substrate
Sakadama is a product developed and manufactured in South Africa. Developed to be a lower cost alternative to Akadama, it now has the added benefit of being more readily available. It is mined, crushed, sieved and then heated to 1100 degrees Fahrenheit. The high heat treatment makes it harder than Japanese Akadama which also causes it to break down much slower and improves it's cation exchange ratio. SAkadama works great in all environments, but is especially ideal when used where akadama is known to break down very quickly (Very Hot/Humid, High Freeze/Thaw cycles, etc.).
SAkadama has a high cation exchange (CE) ratio which helps it to hold nutrients better than substrates such as pumice and lava. While it drains very quickly, SAkadama also holds about 65% water inside the grain which is ideal when used in most mixes, especially a standard akadama, lava, pumice (ALP) mix. It also changes color when wet like Japanese akadama so it will assist you when it comes time to water. SAkadama has a slightly higher iron content than Japanese Akadama which will actually benefit most trees.
SAkadama Available Sizes
Small Grain - (1-3mm) - Shohin/Mame size for smaller trees
Medium Grain - (3-5mm) - Standard Size for most bonsai
Large Grain - (5-8mm) - Drainage layer, used on larger trees and some pines

Don't like this much, it won't hold much water to moisture the soil. However the 4 stars based on good service, ontime shipping and very well packing.
I haven't used it yet
I recently purchased a bag of medium particle size at MABS to try so I haven't had time to see if it made a difference with the growth/health of my trees. However, the product is free of dust and is very uniform in size. It does not need to be sifted but I do anyway with very little coming through the screen. The only negative is that it is light gray in color. Lastly, I am looking forward to when Superfly Bonsai gets some bags of the large particle size in.
I am not a huge fan of Akadama. The one bag I had some time ago I returned because it was too soft and it was not size consistent.
So far I have only used the medium sized Sakadama and I love it. It is harder, therefore ships better with almost no fines. It is super consistent and I use it straight out of the bag. Why do I want to sift if I don't need to.
Several years I used Akadama from Japan, not only is expensive, but was not always available, as a result I had to increase my inventory to insure my operation. Having an alternative with equal quality and more competitive pricing is a win win situation. I will continue using this product into the future until Superfly finds a better deal. As they say in NYC, " SUCH A DEAL"

What is the volume of the package? I only see the weight on the package.
The volume is +/- 14 liters. Since it is filled by weight, the volume is not precise.

Plants + Trees Shipping: Shipping may be delayed to prevent the tree from sitting in a warehouse over a weekend or holiday. Most trees ship Monday-Wednesday. We do not ship trees to PO, FPO, or APO boxes. We also do not ship trees out of the continental US or to California.

For calculated shipping rates: All orders (under $99 USD or Wholesale) will be presented with shipping options that are calculated based on the item weight, box size, and distance from our shipping location. We currently only use Fedex.
Free Shipping: All RETAIL orders over $99.00 USD ship free within the continental USA. Free shipping will be the lowest cost option from FedEx.

How do I Check the Status of my Order?
When your order has shipped, you will receive an email notification from us which will include a tracking number you can use to check its status. Please allow 48 hours for the tracking information to become available.

Show Pickup & The Superfly Express
We attend 7-10 shows a year (if not cancelled), mostly on the east coast. Please check our calendar to see if we may be attending a show close to your location, and we can arrange to bring your order for pickup at the show. No minimum.
We started the Superfly Express shortly after the Covid-19 pandemic started. We did this as a way to get products to wholesale customers with no shipping fee. We basically will deliver your order on one of our trips to your area for free if the order is over $1000 and you are close to our route. We will also deliver retail customers orders over $1000 if they don't want to utilizer our free shipping for whatever reason. We currently only travel east of the Mississippi river and have 4 routes.
